Client Story: How Speech Therapy is Helping Dan Communicate

25 Jul, 2023

Dan is one of our remarkable young clients who has Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and has faced challenges with his speech and communication skills for several years. This has made it difficult for him to engage in certain activities and connect with others. However, his determination and progress have been truly inspiring, and our team enjoy helping him achieve success.

ASD is a lifelong developmental condition that may bring various challenges along with it. These challenges can include difficulties in social interaction, communication, restrictive and repetitive interests, and behaviours, as well as heightened sensory sensitivities.

Our Speech Pathologist, Lauren, started working with Dan started a little over a year ago. Together they set goals that focused on functional communication, primarily through AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) which is a specific type of assistive technology that can benefit people with Autism of all ages.

It promotes independence, expands communication, and increases social interactions. This encompasses the use of hand signs or visual aids to represent concepts and associate them with spoken words, thereby aiding in the development of spoken language and providing diverse communication options.

Dan has made impressive progress in a short amount of time. With the help of the communication device Proloquo2go, he is able to express his needs and desires. This newfound skill has opened a world of possibilities for Dan, allowing him to actively participate in various activities such as attending school, going to the gym, and visiting the library.

Initially, Dan’s Speech Pathology sessions with Lauren were conducted exclusively at his home. However, once they realised that all of Dan’s Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) goals had been achieved in this setting, they decided to venture out into the community.

Lauren is very proud of Dan’s achievements and has been blown away by his progress, quick learning, and positive attitude. They started with simple requests on the device, and now Dan can generate complex sentences and communicate his thoughts and feelings effectively. Their favourite activity that they work on together is ‘I Spy’. We are excited for Dan as the possibilities are now endless as he continues to excel during each session.

Dan’s story is an inspiration to others who are struggling with speech and communication challenges. It shows that with the right help, it is possible to manage these challenges and improve your quality of life within your local community.
