Client Story: Empowering Alex through Physiotherapy

25 Oct, 2023

Discover how Alex’s regular Physiotherapy is empowering him to maintain his independence, increase his confidence and get back to doing the things he loves…

Our Clinician, Cindy, has been providing Physiotherapy to Alex for the past 1.5 years to manage the impact his progressive Multiple Sclerosis (MS) has had on his everyday life. The two work together to empower Alex to work towards maintaining his independence with a goal-driven focus.

What is MS?

Multiple Sclerosis is a chronic condition characterised by the immune system’s attack on the central nervous system, which includes the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves. This immune response damages the crucial signals that travel to and from the brain which leads to the development of various symptoms. These symptoms can include difficulties with muscle control and vision, fatigue, pain, and changes in cognitive function.

Physiotherapy for MS

Fortunately, there are many treatments available to reduce relapses and relieve symptoms of MS, including Physiotherapy. Regular sessions can be used to increase mobility, strength, and balance. Or to address poor posture and even decrease fatigue.

Setting goals

Alex’s ability to live independently both at home and within his community was affected due to his MS, with his balance skills diminishing and mobility significantly declining. His Physiotherapy sessions focus on addressing these challenges by targeting exercises and focusing on pain management. The main aspect of his personalised therapy sessions is to ensure that Alex can comfortably perform exercises independently and easily incorporate them into his daily routine.

Alex’s achievements

Physiotherapy has helped Alex make remarkable progress. Previously, he could only stand on his right leg for up to 4 seconds. With the help of Cindy, he can now maintain his balance for an impressive 17 seconds! Additionally, his walking speed has nearly doubled since beginning his Physiotherapy Journey. These improvements emphasise the effectiveness of physiotherapy in enhancing Alex’s physical abilities.

Looking towards the future

Support through Physiotherapy will continue for Alex, consistently reassessing his needs as he progresses towards his goals. Our aim is to enhance his confidence in accessing the community and engaging in activities he is passionate about. This will enable him to fully participate in the activities and experiences he desires, such as computer workshops.
