Client story: Caroline

31 May, 2022

Winter is officially here and if you’re concerned about exercising in the cooler temperatures, jumping into a heated pool like Jack and his client Caroline, could provide an effective alternative to your regular sessions.

Caroline has been working with Gen Physio since 2019 and has seen a few of our experienced clinicians across Physiotherapy, Speech Pathology, Podiatry and Dietetics.

Most recently, she has been partaking in warm water Hydrotherapy sessions at her local swimming pool with our Physiotherapist, Jack.

Caroline suffers from fibromyalgia which predisposes her to chronic back pain and is a big contributing factor as to why she loves being able to access our mobile allied health services that come to her. Caroline is an NDIS participant and her main goals are to decrease her pain so she can perform her activities of daily living (ADLs) and look after her grandson without any discomfort.

By getting in the pool and using the water’s buoyancy, Caroline can complete pain-free movements that have been assisting in restoring her function and range of movement. At her last session, Jack and Caroline were joined by Rosie, who’s currently in our student placement program. After the session, Caroline said she loved having the extra company and felt like a movie star.

What are the benefits of Hydrotherapy?
The unique benefits that derive from participating in heated pool exercises suit many conditions and injuries. The buoyancy and resistance attributes that moving in water provides are therapeutic and the hydrotherapy water qualities serve as a compression bandage which further adds to the benefits.
With conditions that are sensitive to land-based and/or weight-bearing exercise programs, hydrotherapy is an alternative avenue for exercise-based activity. Hydrotherapy is particularly beneficial for early-stage rehabilitation, long term chronic pain or those who are very de-conditioned.
