An amputation is defined as the removal of part of the limb from the body due to injury, disease, decreased blood flow, cancer, deformity, or infection to a joint. Due to this traumatic event an individual’s lifestyle can change drastically.

Surgery is needed to remove the limb to help the individual continue functioning in their everyday life. There are different surgery methods, but the goal is to provide a stump that a prosthetic can be applied to for mobility purposes. The most common amputations of the lower limbs can occur at the:

  • Hip
  • Knee Joint
  • Above the knee
  • Below the knee
  • Ankle
  • Foot

Post amputation in the hospital, the individual will have help from the medical staff to manage pain and other symptoms that may occur post-surgery and to begin the process of rehabilitation. Before the rehabilitation process commences an individual will be given a compression garment and instructions to begin moulding of the stump to prepare it for a prosthetic. Once discharged from the hospital the main goals will be to return to the lifestyle that the individual was living before the amputation.

This is where our services can be of assistance. During this time, it is important for the individual to have assistance in preventing complications such as contractures, pressure sores, and increased pain. with regaining the ability to stand, get in and out of bed, and weight bearing.
